You will be asked to write a final paper that analyzes the case studies provided, presents best practices, and justifies them using the ethical concepts discussed in class. The essay also requires you to challenge your decision and respond to that challenge.
Structure of the essay:
Paragraph 1: An introductory paragraph containing: o A brief summary of the incident.
o Some possible courses of action (at least some of them).
o Decisions you make as a company manager. Paragraph 2: A paragraph explaining and justifying your decision based on one of the selected readings.
o Your decision should be detailed and justified based on the ideas and arguments contained in our reading. This paragraph must contain at least two direct references to the selected reading.
Paragraph 3: A paragraph that may challenge the decision you make on the basis of other interpretations you have chosen.
o Your objection must be explained in detail and justified on the basis of the ideas and arguments contained in our reading. This paragraph must contain at least two direct references to the selected reading. Note: The reading chosen for this paragraph should be different from the one used in paragraph 2.
Section 4: Section Responding to Objections Raised in Section 3. We encourage you to use the ideas discussed in class in your response to your appeal if possible, but you are not required to provide references in this paragraph.
Paragraph 5: A short final paragraph summarizing the decision and its reasons. Your main argument (on the one hand) and your counter-argument (on the other) should be based on different interpretations. You can use any article you read this semester, but I especially recommend the following:
You are the leader of a new political party in Canada. Let’s call this party “the party of real change”. Real Change Party Communications Her director, Dahlia, would like to meet with you. She wants to share her concerns about Jim, a member of the True Change Party. Jim, who wants to run for the next general election, recently used his professional Facebook page (to promote himself as a candidate) to spread fake news. More specifically, Jim shared a phone call to Dr. British Columbia Health Officer Bonnie Henry has been charged with violating its own rules for non-essential travel during the pandemic1. As you and Dahlia know, this news is completely fake.
Dahlia has already met with Jim to explain the problem. However, Jim insists that because he didn’t write the post himself (he shared posts written by others), he shouldn’t be held responsible for the matter, and that it’s not his job to fact-check every detail he reads online. He is also reluctant to delete posts. While some of Jim’s supporters enjoyed the post, other party members also began complaining about it.
As leader of the Reality Change Party, how would you handle this situation? Describe the decisions you are making and the reasons behind them. (Note the one on p.1. 1: First, present and justify your decision. Then appeal your decision. And finally answer this objection. )
