Submission deadline: Can be submitted to Sakai at any time between November 22nd and November 25th at 23:55. Please answer 5 of the following 6 questions. Each answer is scored from 0 to 8 points for a total of 40 points. Divide this score by 2 to get a score of 20 points. Write in connected sentences, not dot-dot format. Each answer should be around 150-200 words, but can be a little shorter or longer as long as the writing and analysis are of good quality. Clearly state your understanding of the course content and refer to it as explicitly as possible. Be sure to provide a concrete example that illustrates your claim.
1) Explain and illustrate the complex distinction between ‘nature’ and ‘culture’ with reference to Sears and Cairns (Chapter 6) and Omi/Winant.
2) Based on Sears and Cairns (Chapter 2) 5) Explain what “violation experiments” and “brackets” are and discuss how they contribute to our sociological understanding.
3) Use a roller to explain and illustrate Goffman’s “dramaturgy” model of self.
4) Explain and illustrate the claim of Sears and Cairns (Chapter 7) that time appears to be a purely natural system, but is ‘ingrained in our social relationships’.
6) use the readings of Sears and Cairns (Chapter 8) and Campbell/Manning to illustrate their different positions on the issue of bias and neutrality in sociological theory and research. This task is checked for signs of plagiarism. Therefore, be sure to cite the source. When summarizing other people’s ideas, be careful to quote or paraphrase correctly rather than directly duplicating text or examples from lectures, videos, PowerPoint slides, forum posts, Google search results, secondary sources, etc. Course readings can be easily and informally cited without a formal bibliography. (Sears and Cairns, p. 43) or (Roller, p. 103). As long as you make an effort to write down borrowings from your course readings, you don’t have to enter them in your reference list.
External sources aren’t required, but even a bad idea if there’s potential for plagiarism. When referencing external sources, please quote and paraphrase correctly.
Below is a link to the latest version of the APA Style Guide that can be used to cite external sources.
If you rely directly on lectures or PowerPoint slides to develop your own ideas and examples, you should also cite them appropriately. Here’s a short online guide that might help.
