INSTRUCTIONS

Please read the opinion articles from Chapter 9 of the Corporate Social Responsibility textbook that you find in the reading assignment.

Based on what you have learned in this unit, answer the following questions:

When you buy clothing do you check the inside label to see where the item was manufactured? Would it matter to you to discover that an item was manufactured in Bangladesh?
If you found an article of clothing that had a label stating that it was manufactured in the United States, would this make it more attractive to you? What if the item was 20% or 30% more expensive, would that keep you from buying it?
What is the best way to make sure the workers in factories are treated fairly? Can you come up with one detailed proposal?

ANSWERS

Corporate Social Responsibility

Quiz 1.

Examining the inner label of clothing for the production place is a responsible practice for customers who are more concerned about the ethical implications of their purchases. Given Bangladesh’s history of labor rights breaches and safety concerns in the garment industry, discovering that an item was created there might be noteworthy. Reports of low earnings, long hours, and risky working conditions have highlighted the need for higher labor regulations and worker rights (Hopkins, 2012). As a customer, knowing where my clothes come from enables me to connect my purchases with my beliefs, supporting firms that stress fair labor standards while avoiding those linked with exploitation. It represents a feeling of responsibility for the people engaged in manufacturing, fighting for their safety and dignity. By making educated decisions, customers can help to encourage good change in the global supply chain, promoting more openness and responsibility from brands and producers.

Quiz 2.

A label indicating that a clothing item was made in the United States might potentially increase its attractiveness to buyers since it often suggests compliance with superior labor standards and governmental supervision compared to other nations. The “Made in USA” label might invoke associations with exceptional quality, meticulous artistry, and ethical manufacturing standards, appealing to buyers who need reassurance about their products’ origins and production methods. However, the appeal of locally produced items is not just determined by their origin (Hopkins, 2012). However, it is also affected by design, quality, and price. While some customers may be inclined to pay an additional cost for goods manufactured in their own country to promote domestic businesses and guarantee ethical labor standards, others may be more sensitive to price or prioritize other factors when purchasing. A price hike of 20% to 30% on locally produced items might discourage some customers if they see it as being disproportionate to the perceived value or affordability of the product, especially in a competitive market when cheaper alternatives are available. Hence, while the source of a product might impact customer preferences, its total attractiveness is determined by a blend of criteria such as cost, excellence, and alignment with individual beliefs.

Quiz 3.

Achieving equitable treatment of workers in factories requires a thorough and cooperative strategy that involves several parties. One specific suggestion is the implementation and strict enforcement of strong labor standards throughout the supply chain. This consists of implementing periodic audits by impartial third parties to evaluate adherence to labor legislation and ethical norms. Firms must provide clear and detailed information about working conditions, salaries, and employee rights (Srivastava & Singh.,2021). This would ensure that companies are held responsible for their actions. Implementing worker empowerment efforts, such as establishing unions or worker councils, is essential for enhancing workers’ influence and fighting for their interests. Moreover, rewards for suppliers that adhere to ethical standards might motivate them to comply with fair labor policies, thus promoting responsible business practices.

Collaborations across brands, suppliers, governments, and NGOs are essential for facilitating essential and vast transformation. Worker well-being and resilience can be improved through collaborative efforts that prioritize worker education and improvement, fitness and safety enhancements, and ability-building sports. By allocating assets to help the development of nearby groups after industries and facilitating entry to education, healthcare, and social services, it’s far more viable to create more sustainable and fair surroundings for employees and their households (Hopkins, 2012). To ensure equitable remedies for workers, it’s vital for all events worried to collectively prioritize protecting human rights, dignity, and social justice across the complete international supply chain. Through collaboration, stakeholders may cultivate a culture of responsibility and accountability, guaranteeing equitable and ethical treatment of workers at every phase of production.
